Whether you are the mother of the bride or groom, the bride herself or just a guest wanting to make a statement, here is our guide to wearing hats to a wedding. The points listed below are just a guide, but ultimately we would always suggest you wear whatever you feel most comfortable in.
Ladies hats are traditionally worn on the right as dictated by old etiquette where the lady would wear her hat on the right, while her gentleman partner would wear his sword to the left, balancing each other out. Of course nowadays hats can be worn on either side as we no longer follow this etiquette, but you will generally find any purchased hat will be made to be worn on the right or with the decoration on the right. If you would prefer a hat on the left this is perfectly acceptable and a milliner will happily make one for you.
The hat size should be in proportion with the wearer. If you are petite, a pillbox hat or smaller brimmed hat will probably suit better. The taller you are the easier it will be to wear wider brimmed hats. also think about your face shape. If you have a round face, choose a style which will add height and elongate. If you have a small face, wear a smaller hat, and if you have and oval face, you are lucky and can get away with most styles. One of our favourite hat styles which will suit most people is our "Baby CoCo" hat which is pictured below.
4. Securing the hat
Your hat should sit securely when it is worn correctly, some hat types will sit better on different head shapes and hair types. If you are choosing a hat on a hairband make sure it is comfortable and the hairband is the right size for the head. If it is on an elastic you might find adding a few kirby grips through our hair and elastic will make it much more secure. Your milliner will always make sure the hat you choose fits your head and will be secure and comfortable all day long.
Do you want your hat or your hair to make more of a statement? If you want to choose an elaborate hairstyle, choose a smaller hat to compliment the style. For example a small pillbox would be ideal for this. If you want more of the focus to be on the hat, choose a larger hat and keep your hair simple, and neatly up. You can balance your style with the hat having the hat on one side and the hair up on the other side.

3. Consider other guests
Think about where you are sitting, or if you are likely to be hugging lots of people on the day. Try not to annoy other guests by blocking their view of the wedding with an overly large hat, and of course try not to upstage the bride herself!4. Securing the hat
